We have done LOTS of learning this week! Here's what has been happening:
Math: We are on our last unit of math for first grade! This unit cover 2-digit addition. We will be wrapping this up the end of next week.
Science: We have taken our science test and everyone did great on it! There is no more science for the year.
Social Studies: We are finishing up the unit of Maps. Please work on the first grader's home address with them as they will be tested on it!
Language Arts: This week we have been stretching our brains and working on synthesizing with different books. This reading strategy is best explained using the analogy of a moving car merging onto a highway. Like a car who heads down the ramp, as soon as it merges onto a highway of other cars, it must adjust its speed and lanes, whether it needs to speed up or slow down, it changes depending on the flow and speed of traffic. The car is like our thinking. We begin thinking a story is about one thing and using our background knowledge to help us form that prediction. However, as we read further, our thinking changes. We do not let go of our original prediction, but rather we mold it, and sculpt it into something new. By the end of the story, we have made a lot of changes to our original thinking and it has morphed into some thing new bigger and different than it was... not wrong, just different and new based on our interactions with the story. Synthesizing is about creating something new by bringing together many different pieces of information and continually changing our thinking depending on new information. To really grasp this, we turned into super heroes! (enjoy the pictures below).
In writing we are researching an animal of their choosing. There is a note sent home today (in their homework notebooks) talking about their last homework assignment for first grade.
Other important things to note for the week of 5/26:
Monday (5/26): Is the Memorial Day parade. If you are attending, please drop off your child on the corner of Main St. and Centennial St. They may wear their hats that they made! :) When you pick them up, please meet us on the east side of Cityside Middle School. We will be by the power box where the bus drive is.
Thursday (5/29): This is our last day we will be seeing our 4th grade buddies. Mrs. Inman and I would love to do an ice cream social with them outside, weather permitting! If you could please send in your child's favorite ice cream topping before Thursday that would be wonderful! Remember we do have peanut allergies, so please steer clear of anything like that! :)
Friday 5/30: FIELD DAY! Please be sure to send your first grade in layers (cool mornings, warm afternoons) and APPROPRIATE shoes (please no crocs, sandals, etc.). Lunch will be at 12 PM. I will be taking lots of pictures, so if you can't make it throughout the day, check back that night/weekend for pictures! :)
Have a wonderful holiday weekend!
Mrs. Vos
